Description
This is a mid-19th century cottage, originally a low single storey with an attic, and three bays wide. The cottage is built of granite rubble with dressed stone details. The symmetrical south-facing front has a central pair of timber boarded doors and a matching pair of later, piended and canted dormers to the attic. There are timber four-pane sash and case windows throughout. The roof is covered in grey slate, with bracketed eaves and a piended catslide roof to a lean-to on the north elevation. The cottage has gable stacks topped with octagonal chimney cans.
The interior was not accessible when inspected in November 2005.
Hayfield is one of a group of cottages in Braemar that maintain the traditional style of single-storey cottages with dormers and gable stacks. Constructed using local granite rubble, slate, and timber, the building demonstrates traditional construction methods. It occupies a prominent, central location in Auchendryne Square, contributing positively to the village’s streetscape. While it lacks an associated timber wee house, Hayfield represents an older example of this building type in the area, and retains many of its original external features. The cottage is located within the Cairngorms National Park and is shown on the 1864-1871 Ordnance Survey map.
