Description

Auchendryne Lodge is a two-story house dating from around 1890, situated within Auchendryne Square in Braemar, Cairngorms National Park. The house is constructed of snecked rubble with bull-faced stone dressings. It features overhanging eaves and decorative serpentine timber bargeboards with timber finials. The south elevation is symmetrical, with a tall, steeply gabled porch incorporating an arrow slit and flanking canted windows to the ground level. Bipartite windows with timber mullions are set within gabled wallhead dormers above. The north elevation has been altered and includes a large, late 20th-century gabled dormer with a long stair window, flanked by two smaller gabled wallhead dormers. A single-story lean-to now obscures the entire ground floor of this elevation. The windows are predominantly four-pane timber sash and case windows, and the roof is covered with grey slate with a red tile ridge. Ashlar gable stacks are present. Interior access was not possible during a resurvey in November 2005.

Auchendryne Lodge exhibits characteristic features of Braemar architecture, including rubble stonework and a slate roof, as well as decorative timber bargeboards, which suggest a building of some importance. It is an unusually large and well-appointed two-story house compared to others in the village. The house is prominently positioned within Auchendryne Square, the main open space of the village. According to local knowledge, the lodge was originally built as a summer house for the Mar Estate and later served as the residence of the village doctor. This is indicated on a map within the 1906 guide to Braemar.
