Description
The Jubilee Fountain, dated 1897, is a commemorative fountain located in Auchendryne Square, Braemar. It is constructed from pink granite and celebrates the sixtieth year of the reign of Queen Victoria. The fountain has an Ionic capital with the dates 1837-1897 inscribed below. It incorporates a polished inscription panel and a lionhead spout. A carved moulded basin with a drain is also present, topped by an elaborate wrought iron cap.
The inscription reads: 'ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION IN COMMEMORATION OF THE SIXTY YEARS REIGN OF HER MAJESTY QUEEN VICTORIA.' Victoria was highly regarded in the Deeside area, frequently visiting Balmoral and attending the Braemar Highland Gathering. The fountain is a notable example of a local commemorative monument, utilising pink and polished granite, and serves as a reminder of Braemar’s close historical ties to the Royal Family. The fountain is shown on the 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey Map, dating from 1899-1901.
