Description

This is a late 19th century cottage located on Auchendryne Square in Braemar. It is a single storey and attic building with three bays. The cottage is constructed of roughly squared and pinned rubble. The main, or southeast, elevation is symmetrical, featuring a central pair of timber panel doors with glazed upper panels, and a rustic gabled porch. There are piended and canted dormers to the attic. A timber and glazed lean-to and a cat-slide dormer are on the northwest, or rear, elevation. Replacement timber four-pane sash and case windows are fitted, along with grey slate roofing and gable stacks.

The interior retains the original two-room over two-room layout, with a central staircase running parallel to the length of the cottage. Timber panelling is found throughout the ground floor, either as dado height or double height. Original service bells remain in place.

The cottage is part of a group on a prominent location on Auchendryne Square, near St Andrew's Roman Catholic Church, and contributes positively to the village’s character. The use of traditional local materials, particularly granite rubble, is clearly evident. A pond to the rear was formerly a quarry used to source stone for the construction of the church.

The cottage has lost its harl since the previous listing in 1991. Local knowledge suggests that the interior timber panelling originates from Mar Lodge. Historically, Inver Cottage was associated with the adjacent Catholic Church, originally known as Chapelgate, and served as the caretaker's residence. The cottage was formerly known as Piedmonts in 1991.
