Description
Downfield Cottage is a late 19th-century, single-storey and attic cottage built in a T-plan. It is located on Broombank Terrace in Braemar, within the Cairngorms National Park. The cottage is weatherboarded, with the front section flushed and the rest lapped. The symmetrical west-facing elevation has three bays, featuring a central two-leaf timber door flanked by canted windows. There are a pair of piended and canted dormers in the attic, along with further dormers on the east wing.
The windows are predominantly four-pane sash and case, and the roof is covered in grey slate with a tile ridge. A central masonry stack is present.
The interior was not accessible for inspection in November 2005.
Downfield Cottage is one of a group of listed cottages in Braemar, reflecting the traditional character of simple, single-storey and attic dwellings. It is unusual within the village due to its timber-framed construction, most other buildings being of granite rubble. The cottage retains a traditional appearance with its symmetrical principal elevation and attic dormers. While timber framing is a feature of the area, it is more commonly found in smaller "wee houses" built as summer homes. According to the current owner, the cottage was built over 150 years ago and has remained in family ownership since. Ordnance Survey maps from 1899-1901 depict the cottage, and information was provided by the owner in 2005.
