Description

Ravenswood Hotel is a late 19th-century villa featuring a well-detailed two-storey and attic square-plan design with three bays. It has a lower two-storey servants' wing to the east and a distinctive central square cupola topped with an iron finial. The exterior is constructed from pink coursed granite with Aberdeen bonding, and includes a ground cill course, deep eaves, and central timber pedimented roof dormers on the south and north sides, showcasing timber detailing.

On the principal elevation (south), there is a central entrance porch supported by slim cast iron columns, leading to a balcony with finely detailed cast iron railing. The entrance features a six-panelled timber door set within a pilastered doorpiece, flanked by narrow sidelights and a narrow fanlight above. Advanced two-storey gabled tripartite bay windows on either side are adorned with finely decorated bargeboards.

The west elevation includes a central slated lean-to porch with slim, decorative iron columns, with advanced gables rising from the ground and breaking the eaves. The building predominantly features timber sash and case windows, some with nine panes over plate glass. The east side also has timber sash and case windows, and the roof is covered with grade grey slate. Coped wallhead stacks are present on the west and east sides, along with cast iron rainwater goods.

Inside, the original room layout is largely intact, with elaborate decorative cornice plasterwork in the main public room and simpler cornicework in other areas. There are timber five-panel doors and a timber and porcelain 'pull and let go' lavatory by Shanks, Glasgow. The eastern wing features timber dado-panelling.

The boundary wall surrounding the property is made of low granite rubble with rubble coping and square gate piers to the north, which also have square coping.
