Description
The United Free Church of Scotland in Carrbridge is an asymmetrical church designed by architect Alexander Cullen from Hamilton, with local architect Mr. Cattenach from Kingussie contributing in 1909. The church features an east-facing main front with five bays, a gabled left side, and a projecting right side that includes a small wallhead bellcote. It is constructed from sneck coursed rubble with tooled ashlar dressings.
The entrance is square-headed and sheltered by a timber gabled porch, which is supported by a low coped wall. The porch has a slate roof and pegged detailing on the bargeboards. The center bays are lit by three pairs of small square-headed windows, while the outer left gable has a set of triple lancets under a pronounced relieving arch. The north gable also has similar lancets, and the south gable is illuminated by a lunette above a projecting minister's porch. The windows feature square leaded panes, with some displaying colored Art Nouveau detailing. The roof is slate with a squat ridge ventilator.
Inside, the church has an asymmetrical layout oriented to the south, with a low east aisle supported by facetted wooden columns. The interior includes a pine plank dado, pine pews, and a later oak communion table and pulpit. At the rear, there is later partitioning that forms a small chapel, which incorporates an entrance lobby. The chapel walls are adorned with 19th-century memorial tablets from the old Duthill church.
