Description
This is an iron suspension footbridge built in 1892 by James Abernethy and Company, Engineers and Ironfounders, of Aberdeen. It serves as a prominent landmark across the River Dee. The bridge is constructed with lattice girder pylons and wrought iron latticing cables and suspension rods, supporting a timber decking. Late 20th century additions include a railed, ramped approach from the north and a railed, stepped approach from the south, alongside concrete piers.
A plaque on the north pylon commemorates the gifting of the bridge to the public by Mr Alexander Gordon of Southwood, Hildenborough, Kent. The bridge is one of several fine suspension footbridges spanning the River Dee, and is a notable landscape feature due to its delicate latticework parapets. James Abernethy also designed and built the Cambus O'May Bridge (1905), which is also listed at grade B, and the Invercauld Bridge (1924), also listed at grade B.
