Description

Dalnair Farm, dated 1682, with later additions, is a two-story and attic, T-plan building that originally served as a laird's house and later as a manse. It has a crowstepped gable to the central stairtower wing on the north side. The exterior is constructed of harled and painted rubble with partially cemented stone dressings, featuring a base course and eaves cornice. Dressed quoins are visible at the arrises. The windows have what appear to be largely cemented or painted flush architraves; gabled breaking-eves dormers light the attic.

The north elevation presents a near-symmetrical three-bay arrangement to the original section. A central projecting stairtower is topped by a crowstepped gable with beaked skewputts. The entrance, situated to the right of the ground floor, is framed by a rusticated surround, with a lintel inscribed ‘16-M-82’ above a replacement part-glazed timber door. Above the entrance is an empty niche with a moulded architrave, and a small window is visible on the left return. Ground and first floor windows are set back, with the ground floor window enlarged in the mid- to later-20th century. A later single-story lean-to addition obscures parts of the original building to the far right, containing a ground floor window and continuing as a taller single-story addition.

The south elevation also displays a near-symmetrical three-bay arrangement, with a central entrance featuring a painted architrave and a replacement glazed door set back behind a late 20th century semi-octagonal conservatory. Windows are present above the entrance to each floor, and in the flanking bays. Cast-iron wall plates at upper levels indicate the presence of tie rods. A further single-story addition adjoins on the left side. The east elevation is a blank gable end. A later single-story addition projects from the west gable of the original block, extending at a right angle to the left.

The original block features mainly two-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, and coped gablehead stacks are situated at either end (east and west) of the main block, topped with round cans.

The interior retains the original entrance plan, with an entrance hall at the center of the ground floor, a former kitchen to the east, and a parlour to the west. A large round-arched fireplace opening—with a partially cut-away lintel to accommodate a later range—is present in the former kitchen. A stone turnpike staircase rises within the stairtower.
