Description

This is a large, rectangular walled garden dating probably to the early 19th century, situated to the southeast of the main house. The structure is built of red brick with sandstone dressings, including brick capping. The wall has droved quoins delineating the corners. The wall is tallest on the north side, with a slight stepped reduction in height on the east and west sides; a section of the wall is missing from the south side of the west boundary. There are opposing entrances at the north end of both the east and west walls, each with architraved surrounds and droved long and short surrounds to the external face. The west entrance has a panelled timber door, while the east entrance does. An entrance with a stone lintel and a broken panelled timber door is present on the south side, and an inserted gateway is found to the east of the south side.

A conical-roofed summerhouse, designed in the style of a portico and likely constructed in the 1930s or shortly after, is centrally positioned within the north wall. The summerhouse has short brick side elevations to the east and west, each containing a window with a 13-pane timber sash and case. Flanking concrete columns support the front of the segmental-plan open side facing south. A plain, lean-to glasshouse, likely dating from the mid-20th century, adjoins the east side of the north wall.

The walled garden forms a B-group with Finnich Malise House, the steading/stable block, and the Entrance Lodge and Gateway. The garden is depicted on the 1865 Ordnance Survey map and was likely constructed after the property passed from the Stewart family to William Leckie in 1806, who was also responsible for the building of the main house.
