Description

Arivan is a two-storey former commercial building dating from 1914, with alterations in 1932 by David W Glass of Stirling and in 1958. It retains accommodation in the upper floors. The exterior is constructed of red, brown, and black brick, with stone cills, and features base and dividing band courses, as well as an eaves corbel course.

The principal, or southeast, elevation has four windows to each floor. Raised brick pilasters divide the bays, and the first-floor windows break through the eaves into pedimented dormerheads. The southwest elevation features a bay to the right of centre, with a later porch at ground level and a first-floor window breaking the eaves into a pedimented dormerhead. A further first-floor window is located immediately to the left; the bay to the outer left is steeply angled to the west and has a door at ground level and a similar pedimented window above. The northeast elevation includes steps leading up to a partially glazed boarded timber door on the outer left, with a window to each floor in the bay to the right. The first-floor window here is also pedimented. A blank face of an ancillary building, a sand shed, is adjoined to the outer right. The northwest elevation has an early pedimented window to the first floor of the outer left bay, above a vaulted roof of an abutting sand shed. A sliding boarded timber door is centrally positioned, with a further window to the outer right at ground level. A later flat-roofed dormer with three windows sits above.

The windows are timber sash and case with small panes and plate glass, and casement windows. The roof is covered in graded grey slates, and a coped brick stack is present. Plain bargeboarding and overhanging eaves are incorporated into the window pediments. The ground floor interior is a single open space supported by three cast-iron columns. The first floor is modern.

To the southwest is a slated brick stable building with two-pane pivoting windows, and a small-pane glazing pattern in a timber sash and case window. A sliding timber door with a cast-iron running mechanism from the Bonnybridge foundry is centrally positioned, below a pedimented hayloft opening. There are two small windows to the left of centre and one to the right, along with a further boarded timber door and window beyond. A similar small window is present on the southeast elevation, with all openings being segmentally headed. The stable interior includes four looseboxes with original shaped, boarded timber dividers and timber posts, and a small tackroom with a timber-lined stone fireplace. A low, three-bay harled ancillary building with center sliding doors, flanking windows, adjoins the stable. A brick sand shed with a Belfast roof is situated to the northwest with some top-opening metal windows in the harled section and sliding boarded timber.

Coped brick boundary walls, four square section gatepiers with dome finials, and two-leaf boarded timber gates are found in the surrounding landscape.
