Description
The Manse at 5 Manse Road in Colmonell was built in 1822, with later additions and alterations made between 1908 and 1910 by architect Mr. Stevenson. This large, two-storey building features a basement and attic, with three main bays and an additional later bay to the left. An enclosed stone stair with iron railings leads to a moulded doorpiece that has a panelled frieze and cornice above, along with a part-glazed two-leaf timber outer door and a later decorative timber glazed inner door. To the left, there is a later canted oriel, and the roof includes two piended and canted dormers. The building has two basement windows and additional windows close to the rear beneath the later bay. The fenestration is regular, with raised, dressed margins and painted cills, strip quoins, and an eaves cornice. The exterior is rendered.
On the northwest (rear) elevation, the fenestration is irregular. There is a door to the centre left, with stair windows above and flanking single windows at the basement, elevated ground, and first floor levels. The later bay to the right features smaller slit windows. The attic has two piended dormers and two skylights.
The northeast gable is windowless, except for a small slit window in the centre of the basement. The southwest gable has a raised ground level, with a small slit window to the left and a window to the right, along with a first-floor window to the left.
Throughout the building, there are timber sash and case windows, predominantly with 12 panes, although some ground floor windows have been altered to form four-pane plate glass sashes. The roof is covered with grey slates and features coped end stacks, some original moulded clay cans, and straight stone skews. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron.
The interior, partially seen in 2004, includes a hall with a curved stone stair, a plain cast-iron balustrade, and a mahogany handrail. There is plain cornicing and a Greek key pattern cornice. The timber panelled doors have six fielded panels in moulded surrounds, with some featuring corner roundels. A timber chimneypiece with a tiled hearth is located in the later wing.
The property also includes ancillary buildings and boundary walls. There is a detached single-storey building with a piend roof, featuring an arched cart entrance to the outer left, a large rectangular opening, two small square windows, and three timber boarded doors. This building has a grey slate roof with catslide roof vents and end stacks. Additionally, there is a coalhouse at the rear of the house with a corrugated-iron roof, which is attached to a high coped rubble wall. Similar walls enclose the courtyard.
