Description
The railings at Hamilton College of Education date back to 1834 and are presumably designed by David Hamilton. They were cast by Shotts Iron Company and were originally made for Hamilton Palace before being relocated to their current site. The railings consist of five panels set in slim square concrete bases. Each panel features an 11-bay Ionic baluster-shaped pilaster arcade adorned with pendant swags, acanthus leaves, and anthemia at the base of the pilaster. Above the pilasters, there is a band of diamonds of alternating widths over balls at the bottom, with circles of rosettes centered over arches and a trefoil rail at the top.
