Description
Clydesholm Bridge, built by John Lockhart of Birkenhead, Lanark, between 1696 and 1699, is a three-span bridge featuring large semicircular arches and massive piers with triangular cutwaters. These cutwaters extend upwards to create pedestrian refuges on both the upstream and downstream sides. The bridge is constructed of squared rubble, with more regularly sized blocks used for the parapet, and it has narrow voussoirs. The wing walls at either end are stepped outwards. In the 20th century, the carriageway level was raised, which required the parapet to be elevated as well.
