Description
The Lindsay Institute, located on Hope Street in Lanark, was designed by Traill and Stewart in 1912 and is built in a Neo-Georgian style. It features a basement and two storeys, with a total of nine bays. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, which includes a channelled basement, a ground floor, voussoirs, and quoins.
The central entrance has a round-headed door and a projecting portico, which is supported by two pairs of Ionic columns on pedestals, along with Ionic pilasters. There are four steps leading up to the entrance, and a balcony is situated above the porch. A band course runs along the first floor, complemented by a cill course. The central feature on the first floor is a pilastered Venetian window set within a shallow open pedimented projection. All first-floor windows are adorned with architraves. The building is topped with a bold block cornice and a blocking course, and it has a piended slate roof that includes a central timber Arts and Crafts-style finialled bellcote.
The statutory address for the building was updated in 2021.
