Description
Uddingston Grammar School, built around 1885 with later alterations and additions in 1925, 1960, and 1994, is a two-storey, five by four bay asymmetrical original L-plan grammar school featuring Dutch gables and Gothic details. The building is constructed from stugged red sandstone ashlar with polished ashlar dressings, including a base course, hood moulds over ground and some first-floor windows, and a cill course to the first floor. The windows have chamfered reveals, stone mullions, and long and short quoins.
The north (principal) elevation has five bays, arranged in a grouped pattern of three and two, with an advanced gabled two-bay block to the right. Each bay at both floors contains a bipartite window. The outer right gabled bays are flanked by ogee capped and finialled piers with bracketed scrolls. The gablehead features a double blind slit motif with a cill course and a broken pediment, while a small round-arched pediment with a ball finial sits at the gable apex.
The east (side) elevation consists of four bays, grouped two and two, with a slightly advanced gabled two-bay block to the right, mirroring the gable treatment of the north elevation. The left two-bay block has a bipartite window at each floor, while the right bay has a single window at each floor.
The building has replacement uPVC windows and a grey slate roof with a pierced red clay ridge. There is a polygonal (later) ashlar stack at the west end, ashlar coped blocked skews, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen in 1997. The boundary walls and gatepiers feature replacement square-plan piers with shallow pyramidal caps and replacement wrought-iron gates. The low ashlar sandstone walls have a ridged ashlar cope and regular tall intervals on the east side, along with decorative wrought-iron railings that have been replaced on the north side.
