Description
The Rowan Tree Inn is an early 19th century public house, with significant alterations and additions undertaken between 1902 and 1903 by Alexander Cullen. It is a single-story building with a symmetrical, rectangular main section, originally three bays wide, with balancing wings added to the sides. The building is constructed of painted, droved ashlar sandstone with painted detailing around the openings. A base course, eaves course, and cornice run along the facade, with the cornice slightly projecting over the main entrance. Raised cills and cast-iron Corinthian mullions are present on the windows, and strip quoins define the corners of the balancing bays.
The west (principal) elevation features a recessed, two-leaf, timber-panelled entrance door flanked by restored timber Corinthian columns and painted vertical strips. A shaped, Jacobean-style timber gable sits above the door. Tripartite windows with round-arched dormer lights are set within shaped timber gables above each bay. A modern window and door are incorporated into a recessed bay on the right side, and a window is present in a recessed bay on the left side.
A partially visible rear (east) elevation includes a square-plan addition to the center, with a piend-and-platform roof and a harled finish. The north side shows a blank wall of stugged and coursed sandstone rubble, with a harled screen wall to the left. A painted wall with two ventilation openings is visible on the south side.
The windows are fixed, with horizontal astragals and reinforced glass, and the flanking bays have four-pane timber sash and case windows. The grey slate pitched roof has piended ends, with slate also covering the rear addition. Tapered square vents with conical caps and the remains of an iron balustrade run along the ridge. Painted ashlar coped stacks are positioned on the north and south sides, along with original gabled ends, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior is well-preserved and includes a timber-panelled ceiling with a beaded cornice to the three-sided, timber-framed entrance porch. Etched glass doors with fanlights above are also present. The walls are lined with painted boards up to picture rail height, with pitched pine coving separating the walls from the ceiling, and timber lining flanking the dormer alcoves and above the picture rail. A shaped, pedimented fireplace is located at the north end. Architectural shelving lines the entire back (east) wall of the bar, with a bar in front, featuring a dentilled and beaded cornice supported by square columns with similar capitals, and bisected by a thicker beaded shelf, all added during the 1902-03 renovations.
It appears to have begun as an early 19th century farmhouse, evolving into a public house with distinctive features added during the early 20th century renovations. The building appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1862 and figures in the 1871 census report for the Parish of Bothwell.
