Description

This is a three-storey, five-bay tenement building dated 1876, designed by Wilson Walker and situated on a corner plot where Old Glasgow Road meets Bellshill Road in Uddingston. The building is constructed from red sandstone ashlar, with channelled detailing at ground level and polished dressings. It features a corbelled corner turret. A base course runs around the building, above which is a cornice above the ground floor, a continuous round tower feature, cill courses to the first and second floor windows, and a lintel course at the first floor, extending as a cornice around the tower. A string course sits below a consoled eaves course, which itself is topped by a cornice. Moulded architraves frame the single and bipartite windows on the first and second floors, with pediments above the first-floor windows. The tower windows have chamfered reveals, and a channelled strip pilaster accentuates the angle of the building facing Old Glasgow Road.

The west elevation, facing Old Glasgow Road, features paired, round-arched door surrounds with replacement timber panelled doors and round-arched fanlights, located to the left of the centre. Three single windows are spaced evenly to the right. The first and second floors each have a single window in the centre, flanked by bipartite windows. Unevenly-spaced wallhead stacks are visible above the second floor. The corner turret is corbelled at the first floor level, incorporating a four-light window on each floor above, and topped with a conical roof featuring a decorative cast-iron finial.

The north elevation, facing Bellshill Road, displays a grouping of windows as 2-1-2 at ground level, with the centre and right-hand windows positioned closely together. The first and second floors each feature a single window flanked by bipartite windows. A wallhead stack is situated between the centre and left bay.

The rear elevation is partially obscured, but shows irregular window placement. The interior of the building was not inspected in 1997.

The building retains two-pane timber sash and case windows, although some have been replaced with modern aluminium and hardwood frames. It is capped by a grey slate roof, with a modern felted roof over the turret. Tall ashlar stacks, shouldered and corniced, rise from the roof, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

Along with the contemporary building at 7-25 Main Street (listed separately), this tenement forms a significant element within the townscape. The building appears on the 1899 Ordnance Survey map and is featured in a photograph in "Uddingston in Old Picture Postcards" (1984).
