Description
St Nicholas Church, located on High Street in Lanark, was built in 1774, with interior modifications made in 1830 and 1870. The church has a rectangular plan and features a projecting tower at the east end. The body of the church is finished in stucco and has rusticated quoins. The tower is built from rubble and consists of six stages, with rusticated and painted quoins and band courses on the lower three stages. The fourth stage has angle margins, while the fifth stage features a clock dated 1774 on each face. The sixth stage has moulded set backs and keystoned, round-headed, louvred openings. At the top, there is a cornice with urns at the corners, an octagonal dome capped with an obelisk and a weather-vane.
The east face has a round-headed entrance with coved reveals and a Gibbs surround. Above the entrance is a statue of William Wallace, created in 1817 by Robert Forrest, which stands on a corbelled plinth beneath a pinnacled canopy. The body of the church includes five tall round-headed windows with margins, imposts, and keystones. Above these are five smaller gallery windows of a similar design on both the north and south elevations. The gable end flanking the tower also features similar windows. There is a square-headed door at the southeast with a Gibbs surround, and the roof is piended and covered with slate.
The church houses a town bell that was founded in 1110 and recast in 1659, 1740, and 1830, and it was brought into the church in 1777.
