Description

Victoria Buildings, located at 29 Quarry Street in Hamilton, date back to 1887. This three-storey tenement block features a classical design and includes shops on the ground floor. The building is arranged in a stepped formation with three, seven, and two bays, and has a single bay return elevation facing Regent Way.

The exterior is constructed from cream sandstone ashlar with rubble on the sides and topped with a slate roof. The ground floor has modern shopfronts, while the first floor features a key pattern cill band, which is partly obscured at the outer bays. The second floor has a moulded cill band, a wallhead course, and a corniced blocking course.

Windows on the building are architraved, with cornices and mannered pediments on the first floor. The second-floor windows are keystoned and segmental, breaking into the wallhead course. Originally, these windows were four-pane sash and case, but most have been replaced with plate glass or modern frames that do not match the original style. The building also has three corniced wallhead stacks at the center, decorated with volutes, as well as two ridge stacks, one of which has been rebuilt in brick, and cut-down end stacks.
