Description

The building is a former manse located at 6 Manse Avenue in Bothwell, dating from the earlier 19th century with later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure with a plain rectangular plan and a single-storey, pitch-roofed wing at the rear (east elevation). The exterior is constructed of droved red sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, featuring a base course and an eaves course. The windows have painted architraves and strip quoins.

On the west (principal) elevation, there is a raised doorpiece flanked by Doric columns that support a blank frieze, cornice, and blocking course at ground level in the central bay. The entrance features a timber panelled door with a rectangular fanlight and stained glass, with a window above on the first floor. Each of the flanking bays has a window on both floors.

The east (rear) elevation is three-bay, with a two-bay addition projecting east from the central bay. This addition has a window to the left and a blocked door to the right, with a stair window above. There is a window in the bay to the right on each floor. A replacement door is set wide at ground level in the left bay, with a window above on the first floor.

The south (side) elevation is two-bay with a single bay addition set back to the right. Each bay of the main house has a window at ground level, and there is a centrally disposed wallhead stack above. The addition features a window set to the left, with a small window flanking it, and a centrally disposed wallhead stack above.

The north (side) elevation has a single bay with a three-bay addition set back to the left. There is a wide window at first floor level in the outer right bay. A lean-to addition with boarded doors is set wide to the left at ground level, along with a small window in the centre of the addition and a replacement door to the outer right. Replacement French windows are located to the outer left.

The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the addition has 2-pane timber sash and case windows. There is a stained glass fixed stair window. The roof is covered with grey slate, with the addition also having grey slate, a modern covering on the lean-to, and a replacement harled wallhead stack to the south of the main house. The addition has an ashlar coped wallhead stack and ashlar coped skews, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 1997.
