Description

Bonnington Mains is a group of 18th century farm buildings with early 19th century additions, arranged around a courtyard. The complex includes a two-storey, L-shaped threshing barn with a hayloft and a semi-octagonal horsemill to the northwest; a single-storey, rectangular bothy and stable range to the northeast; and a two-storey, five-bay farmhouse to the southeast, which faces the courtyard. The threshing barn, horsemill, and steading are constructed of rubble with droved ashlar sandstone dressings, while the farmhouse is harled. The barn and stable range feature pointed arch windows on their southern gables, with ashlar window margins throughout. The roofs are mainly gabled, with a piended roof on the southern wing of the barn.

The threshing barn has asymmetrically placed door openings on its northern leg, including a sliding door to the right, a slit window above it, and a square window opening on the far right of the southeast elevation. The southwest elevation has an open facade with iron columns, serving as an implement shed. There is an opening with a two-leaf timber-boarded door on the eastern gable. The semi-octagonal horsemill projects to the northwest and includes a ridge ventilator, rooflights, and a large opening on its eastern side.

The stable and bothy range consists of seven bays, with the stable on the left, a central vehicle shed featuring a sliding door, and the bothy on the right with timber-boarded doors. Inside, the stables retain their original stalls, and there is a fireplace opening in the bothy.

The farmhouse was originally two separate dwellings and features fairly regular fenestration with two projecting porches on the southwest (front) elevation. The rear has irregular fenestration. It has coped gablehead stacks with clay cans. The steading includes some small-pane glazing, while the farmhouse predominantly has non-traditional uPVC windows. The barn and house have ashlar-coped skews, while the stable range has squared rubble skews. The roofs are covered with grey slates and zinc ridges.
