Description
Bonnington Power Station, located at the Falls of Clyde, was designed by Sir Edward MacColl with input from an Amenity Committee that included the Earl of Home, Sir John Stirling Maxwell of Pollok, and architect Sir Robert Lorimer. The plans and specifications were created by Messrs Buchan & Partners, engineers, while civil engineering was carried out by Sir William Arrol & Co. The hydro-electric plant was supplied by the English Electric Co. The power station was built in 1925, with some later alterations, including the replacement of gates.
The structure features a flat-arched, white-rendered reinforced concrete bridge and a tilting weir, which retains some original steel sluice gates made by Ransomes & Rapier Ltd of Ipswich. The weir includes square section cutwaters with chamfered edges at water level. There are three moveable riveted steel gates with cross bracing, set within a reinforced concrete frame. A spillway is located on the east side of the weir, equipped with trash screens. The original street lamps line the roadway of the bridge, and the gateposts and other ironwork were crafted by Ramage & Whitehead of Glasgow. In the early 21st century, some new gates were added as part of the alterations.
