Description
South Lodge, Birkwood House, is probably of mid-19th century origin and comprises a picturesque castellated gateway with a lodge. The building is constructed of rock-faced ashlar with contrasting dressings. The lodge itself is a single-storey structure of small proportions, featuring a parapetted roof and a doorway leading to the driveway. There are two rear outshots which appear to be later additions. The lodge has two pairs of tall, diamond-shaped flues, and features stone mullioned sash windows. The roofs are slate-covered. The gateway has a tall archway at the driveway flanked by octagonal turrets and curved quadrants; the lodge is incorporated at the southern portion of the gateway. A pedestrian gate is located to the north of the drive and is set within an elaborate cast-iron gate, while the gates to the main driveway are plainer.
