Description

The Forestry Commission and Department of Employment building at 14-16 Hamilton Street in Girvan is a two-storey and attic bank building designed in the style of David Rhind, dating from around 1870. It features a five-bay façade in the French Renaissance style, constructed from lightly stugged red sandstone with polished yellow ashlar dressings and quoins.

The central three bays project boldly and contain square-headed architraved windows on the ground floor, although the cornices are missing. Above, a band course supports pilasters that frame round-arched and keystoned windows on the first floor, which are set in recessed bays and similarly detailed. The building is topped with a dentilled cornice and a parapet that has ball finials at the corners. This is interrupted by a tall, central, pilastered, round-arched dormer with a segmental pediment, all set within a steep mansard roof.

The design includes projecting porches at the re-entrant angles, featuring round-arched, pilastered doorpieces, dentilled cornices, and balustraded parapets, along with boldly channelled quoins. Additionally, there are two tall stacks at the junction of the central mansard and the flanking piended roofs.
