Description

85 St Meddans Street in Troon is a cottage built in the earlier to mid 19th century. It is asymmetrical, single storey with an attic, featuring three bays and an advanced gable on the left side. There is a single storey, two-bay addition that is recessed to the outer left. The building is constructed of tooled rubble sandstone with painted dressings, a raised base course, and a moulded eaves course. It has narrow strip quoins, painted margins, and projecting cills.

On the southeast side facing St Meddans Street, the original cottage has a centrally located two-leaf timber panelled door with a tripartite fanlight above and a painted door surround. There is a single window in the outer right bay and decorative timber bargeboards on the gabled dormer above. To the left of the entrance, in the advanced gabled bay, there is a tripartite window at ground level with narrow side lights, and a single window centered in the apex above, which features a ball finial. The two-bay addition to the outer left has bipartite and single windows.

The cottage has 2-, 8-, and 12-pane timber sash and case glazing, along with a single skylight. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, featuring a piended roof on the side addition, painted skews, and moulded skewputts. The rainwater goods have been replaced. There are stepped, whitewashed corniced apex stacks on the northeast and southwest sides, topped with circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1997. The property is enclosed by a boundary wall made of random rubble with painted coping, and features a decorative cast-iron pedestrian entry gate.
