Description
The building at 17 and 19 Knockcushan Street in Girvan is a later 19th-century Italianate council office, originally constructed for the West Cumberland Farmers Association. It is two storeys high and consists of 11 bays. The exterior is made of red sandstone, featuring channelled outer pilaster strips and a central shallow advanced bay.
A central depressed archway leads to the rear of the building, topped with a cornice, and there are semi-circular headed lights above a Venetian window in the first floor, which has panelled aprons below the window. The flanking bays on each storey have single light windows with simply moulded architraves and bracketed cills, although the ground floor on the right has been altered. The first floor has central windows set in recessed bays with moulded aprons. The building is finished with a corbelled cornice and a blocking course that features a central pediment with a finial. The roof is slate.
