Description
68-68A South Beach in Troon is a mid-19th century single-storey cottage with a four-bay main section and two single-storey additions, one advanced to the outer right and one recessed to the outer left. The building is constructed from squared and snecked tooled rubble sandstone with lightly droved polished dressings. It features a raised base course and overhanging timber bracketed eaves. The cottage has tooled quoins, tooled long and short surrounds to chamfered openings, and chamfered cills.
On the northeast elevation facing South Beach, the original block has steps leading to a recessed timber panelled door that is offset to the left of centre. Above the door is a bipartite fanlight and an architraved hoodmould with a painted, basket-arched surround. A king-post truss is visible above the bracketed gable that breaks the eaves. There is a narrow window in the bay to the left and single windows in the outer left and right bays. The addition to the outer right is regularly fenestrated, while the outer left features part-glazed timber garage doors with square lights.
The southwest elevation facing the Esplanade includes a single window centered at ground level, a bipartite window in the outer right bay, and a box-dormer above. There is a three-light canted window in the gabled bay to the outer left, with an attic window centered in the apex above. The addition to the outer left has a gabled porch to the right and a single window to the left, while the outer right addition features patio windows to the right and a small bipartite window to the left.
The original block has 12-pane lying-pane timber sash and case glazing, while the remaining openings include 2- and 4-pane timber sash and case glazing, with some uPVC at the rear. The roof is covered with graded grey slate featuring a fishscale easing-course and has replacement rainwater goods. The central block has stop-chamfered apex stacks, a wallhead stack to the northwest, and circular cans.
The interior was not seen in 1997. The property is enclosed by low coped rubble walls to South Beach and taller rubble walls surrounding the sides and rear of the site.
