Description

This is an early 20th-century Arts and Crafts style house, located on a corner site at 58 Bentinck Drive, Troon. The asymmetrical design includes a near T-plan layout, with three bays facing Bentinck Drive and three bays facing Yorke Road. The main block is constructed of squared and snecked stugged red sandstone at ground level, with a whitewashed harl finish to the first floor. A gabled wing projecting to the northwest has whitewashed harl on both floors.

The building features a chamfered plinth that rises to a ground floor cill course, with the first floor slightly overhanging. The eaves are supported by overhanging timber brackets, and the swept timber bargeboards are spaced with regularly placed bolts. Polished quoins are present at ground level, and the window surrounds have a rake-jointed long and short design with sandstone mullions and transoms, and chamfered cills flush at first floor level.

The northeast (Bentinck Drive) elevation has a part-glazed, timber-panelled front door, set within an architraved surround with angled crenellation to the parapet. A tripartite window is in the advanced bay to the left of centre, with a 4-light glazing row above on the first floor. A single window is centred in the recessed bay to the right, flanked by narrow single windows, and a 4-light glazing row is set beneath a cat-slide roof breaking the eaves.

The southeast (Yorke Road) elevation features a bipartite window off-set to the left of centre at ground level and a bipartite window centred in the gable above. Bipartite windows are present at both floors in the bay to the outer right. A projecting five-light window is at ground level in the bay to the outer left, topped with a corniced parapet, with a tripartite window above in the gable. A single window is set within a lean-to addition recessed off the outer left.

The windows are predominantly a mix of 9-pane upper and plate glass lower timber casement glazing at ground level, with 8- and 15-pane timber casement glazing to other openings; a single-storey lean-to addition features uPVC windows. The roofs are swept and red tiled, and the rainwater goods are cast iron. Moulded red sandstone copes top the whitewashed ridge and wallhead stacks, which have circular cans. The interior was not inspected in 1997.

The site is enclosed by a stepped, harled wall with sandstone coping. Square-plan sandstone piers flank the corner entry to the east, with ball finials and a timber pedestrian gate. Square-plan, whitewashed piers with pyramidal caps flank the entry from Bentinck Drive, and include timber pedestrian gates, and separate timber vehicular access gates are also present.
