Description

76 South Beach in Troon is a mid to late 19th century, two-storey house with an attic, featuring three bays in a plain classical style. It has single-storey, single-bay pavilions that are recessed on both the left and right sides. The entrance on the outer left has been modified with a pediment. The exterior is made of painted coursed and stugged sandstone with painted dressings and rubble at the rear. Architectural details include a raised base course, an eaves course beneath corniced eaves, a blocking course, and a lintel course on the side pavilions. The building has narrow strip quoins, architraved window surrounds on the central block with consoled pediments at the ground level, projecting cills, and a pilastered entrance. There is a boarded timber stair addition to the upper flat, which is recessed to the outer left.

On the northeast elevation facing South Beach, there is a timber panelled door at the centre with a tripartite fanlight above. The doorpiece features flanking double pilasters, a plain frieze, a cornice, a block pediment, and a raised keystone. Above the door, there is a timber-mullioned bipartite window. The right bay has single windows on both floors, while the left bay has a timber-mullioned bipartite window at ground level and a single window above. A box dormer is located at the centre. The flanking pavilions each have single windows, and there is a modern door in the pedimented bay to the outer left.

The southwest elevation facing the esplanade has a small opening at ground level from the original house and a single window aligned above it on the first floor. There are 3-light canted windows in both floors of the left bay, with a tripartite box dormer above. The right bay also has single windows on both floors and a tripartite box dormer above. A single door is located at ground level in the single-storey wing to the outer left, and there is a glazed addition next to the stair addition on the outer right.

The front features 6- and 12-pane lying-pane timber sash and case glazing, while the rear predominantly has replacement glazing, though some timber sash and case glazing remains at ground level. The roof is covered with grey slate, has raised skews, and replacement rainwater goods. There are coped apex stacks on the northwest and southeast sides, with circular and octagonal cans.

The interior was not seen in 1997. The boundary walls consist of a stepped, coped, and painted rubble wall along South Beach and a random rubble wall enclosing the site at the rear.
