Description

60 South Beach and 58 Troon is a two-storey, three-bay plain classical house built by William Young in 1854. It features a single-storey, single-bay addition recessed to the outer right and a two-storey, two-bay addition to the outer left (No 60). The building is constructed from squared and snecked tooled cream rubble sandstone with painted dressings. It has a painted base course, a lintel course beneath the corniced eaves, and a painted blocking course. The corners are marked by narrow strip quoins, and the windows at No 58 have architraved surrounds with bracketed cills on the first floor, while the additional wings have plain surrounds and projecting cills. The rear is finished in random rubble.

On the northeast elevation (South Beach) of No 58, there is a centrally located timber panelled door at ground level with engraved glazing in the vestibule door and a tripartite fanlight above. The doorpiece is flanked by pilasters, a plain frieze, and a cornice. There is a single window aligned at the first floor, with additional single windows in the bays flanking the entrance. A single window is also centered in the recessed addition to the outer right. For No 60, there is a recessed timber panelled door in the bay to the outer left, with a single window above and single windows at both floors in the bay to the right.

The southwest elevation (Esplanade) of No 58 features a stair window at the first floor, offset to the right of center, with single windows at both floors in the bay to the left. The bay to the right has three-light canted windows at both floors with stop-chamfered surrounds. There is a small-paned opening centered in the piended wing that advances to the outer left. In No 60, French doors are located in the piended addition to the outer right, with a single window aligned at the first floor and single windows at both floors in the bay to the left.

The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case glazing, with some replacement glazing at the rear and a part-stained stair light. The roof is covered with graded grey slate and has painted skews, along with replacement rainwater goods. No 58 has corniced, whitewashed apex stacks and various octagonal cans.

The interior was not seen in 1997. The boundary walls consist of a low coped wall along South Beach with whitewashed square-plan piers topped with pyramidal caps, and a coped random rubble wall enclosing the site at the rear.
