Description
This is a mid-19th century, symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay plain classical house situated on South Beach in Troon. It is accompanied by a single-storey, single-bay piended pavilion recessed to the outer left and right. A former gig-house, also single-storey with an attic and three bays, is set into the north wall, and a seven-bay cottage adjoins the house to the west, at 2A Victoria Drive.
The main house is constructed from squared and snecked tooled cream rubble sandstone with polished grey sandstone dressings. Key features include a raised base course, a lintel course beneath corniced eaves, a polished blocking course, prominent long and short quoins and surrounds to the openings, projecting cills, and a pilastered entrance. The former gig-house is built from weather-beaten rubble sandstone with polished dressings to its round-arched openings and overhanging, timber bracketed eaves. The adjoining cottage at 2A Victoria Drive is harled with a painted eaves course, raised margins, and projecting cills.
The northeast (South Beach) elevation features a two-leaf, timber panelled door centered at ground level, with a plate glass fanlight. The surrounding doorpiece includes flanking pilasters, a plain frieze, a cornice, a block pediment, and a raised keystone. A single window is positioned at first floor level above the door. Smaller windows are found to the left of the entrance and at both floors in the outer left and right bays. Single windows are centred in the flanking pavilions.
The southwest (Esplanade) elevation incorporates a single-storey conservatory offset to the left of centre and a large stair window centered at first floor level. Single windows are present at both floors in the outer left bay, and a full-height canted bay to the right, featuring four-light windows at both floors with incised segmental arched surrounds at the first floor. This bay has an overhanging timber bracketed gable. A single window sits in a single-storey addition to the outer right, and a single-storey, piended addition is projected to the front.
The front of the house has 12-pane lying-pane timber sash and case glazing, while the rear windows feature 2-pane timber sash and case glazing, some of which have been replaced. The roof is grey slate, with replacement rainwater goods. Corniced wallhead stacks are located to the northwest and southeast, topped with circular and octagonal cans. The interior of the main house was not inspected in 1997.
Low, coped rubble walls define the boundary along South Beach, with whitewashed, stop-chamfered, square-plan piers flanking the pedestrian entrance, topped with ogee-style caps and a timber gate. A coped, random rubble wall encloses the site at the rear, featuring ball-shaped finials flanking a timber pedestrian entry gate. The gig-house’s northwest (entrance) elevation includes a two-leaf boarded timber door, flanking round-arched, narrow openings, and a round-arched opening breaking the eaves beneath a gableheaded dormer. It has a grey slate, pyramidal roof. The interior of the gig-house was also not inspected in 1997. The northwest (entrance) elevation of 2A Victoria Drive presents a boarded timber door in the outer left bay and single windows in the remaining bays to the right. It has modern glazing throughout, a grey slate piended roof, and a harled ridge stack offset to the left of centre. The interior of the cottage was not inspected in 1997.
