Description

67-71 Sandgate in Ayr is a three-storey, three-bay classical Edwardian Baroque tenement and restaurant, built in 1911 by J R Johnstone of Troon. It is located on a corner site and features a prominent projecting circular domed bay. The exterior is constructed of red sandstone ashlar and includes a string course that separates the first and second floors, along with a cornice and parapet.

The northwest elevation, which serves as the entrance, showcases a central columned doorpiece with decorative corbels supporting a broken pediment. The entrance is round-arched and features alternate hollowed quoins and a glazed door. Flanking the upper windows are pilasters that align above, with a transomed and mullioned two-light window on the first floor and an arched fanlight window on the second floor. The pilasters also form a broken mutuled pediment, and there is ornamental swag-work in the tympanum. The ground floor includes shop windows on the outer right and left, with canted windows on the upper floors. The projecting domed bay on the outer left has three two-light windows on both the first and second floors, with transoms at the first floor and swagged shields on a banded frieze.

The northeast elevation, facing Boswell Park, is two-bay and features a bowed corner bay on the outer right and a canted bay on the outer left. The first floor includes a transomed and mullioned two-light window, while the second floor has a mullioned two-light window. There is also a projecting central canted blank bay.

The building has timber casement windows in the lower sections and multi-paned windows in the upper sections on the first and second floors. The roof is made of grey slate, with a red tiled dome, a rooflight, coped wallhead stacks, and circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1998.
