Stables, Grey Gables, Southwood Road, Monkton

These stables, dating to around 1908, are arranged in a U-shaped plan and include a gardener’s cottage in the north-western arm. The buildings are constructed from stugged and snecked sandstone rubble, repointed in modern materials. They have a low-pitched slate roof, swept at the eastern and western ends to accommodate dormer windows, with the roofline set back behind the dormers and then overhanging at ground floor level. The windows are mullioned, with two or three lights, and feature leaded glazing, although the north-facing courtyard elevations have been altered with modern doors and windows. Gabled wallheads are located at the north-western and north-eastern re-entrant angles, containing a tripartite attic window in the north-west and a hayloft opening with a hoist at the apex in the north-east. A decorative cupola sits at the centre of the roof ridge, featuring eight small columns on a corniced plinth, a corniced upper section, a leaded cupola, and a finial.
