Description

Southwood Road features a 2-storey, 3-bay gabled villa designed by Fryers and Penman between 1909 and 1910. The building is set within its own grounds and has been divided into three dwellings as of 2013. It is constructed from red brick with faience margins and decorative inset flint panels, and includes a base course and a moulded band course. The window openings are characterized by deep-set Tudor-arched windows, with faience and brick mullions and transoms, and some bi-partite window openings. The gables are adorned with bargeboarding that features a decorative foliate motif.

The west elevation, which serves as the main entrance, is asymmetrical with three bays. It has two-storey, double-gabled bays on the right and a single-storey bay on the far left. The right bay features low quadrant walls with pierced trefoil decoration leading to the entrance door at the far right, which is framed by a round-arched, key-stoned surround with Doric columns and a broken-base pediment that displays carved fruit and foliage in the tympanum. The entrance door itself is a two-leaf panelled round-arched design. The far left bay includes a 4-light canted window at ground level.

The south elevation is symmetrical with three bays, featuring a recessed wide central bay that has a part-glazed garden door flanked by windows, along with a cast iron balcony on the upper storey. The left bay has an advanced, finialled gable with 4-light canted window bays, while the right bay contains 3-light square-bay windows. The roof is covered with red tiles, and there are tall, coped chimney stacks with vertical panels and red cans, along with cast iron rainwater goods.

The interior, partially visible as of 2013, retains much of its original room layout in the main areas. It features an open well timber stair with decorative timber balusters, a banister, and newel posts. Public areas are adorned with timber panelling, and a wide segmental arch leads to an inglenook fireplace surrounded by timber panelling. There are also decorative timber fire surrounds, one room boasts a decorative plaster ceiling, and timber panelled doors, some of which include stained glass.

To the south, there is a low coped brick garden wall topped with urns at the entrance and corners.
