Description

This is a walled garden with greenhouses and associated structures, dating from the earlier to mid-19th century. It is located on the Auchincruive Estate, which has a history of ownership stretching back to the 13th century, passing through various hands before being acquired by Richard Oswald in 1764. The estate remained in the Oswald family until 1925 when it was gifted to the West of Scotland Agricultural College, where it remains. The formal landscape was established in the 18th century and remodelled circa 1830, likely when the walled garden was constructed.

The garden features a curved, terraced layout with two chambers. It is enclosed by coped brick walls, and incorporates a walled corridor that runs from east to west through the centre. A lean-to glasshouse is situated in the centre of the north wall, with stepped-down flanking walls. A recessed-arched sandstone gateway, featuring a two-leaf cast-iron gate, is located on the west side. Another lean-to glasshouse stands to the south of the central wall on the southern terrace, backed by brick, sandstone, and concrete potting sheds, gardeners’ accommodation, and glasshouses—though some of the glasshouses have been removed. Curved walls step down to the west, with a doorway and brick arch providing access to the north terrace, and a further two-leaf cast-iron gate on the southwest. A square-plan, single-storey and attic lodge sits at the eastern end, flanked by a two-leaf cast-iron gate. The lodge served as the Head Gardeners House, and the buildings along the central service corridor housed potting sheds and additional gardener accommodation. The garden currently exhibits a mix of formal and informal planting, although much of the planting is of 20th-century origin, with only some original yew trees surviving.

This is an A-Group listed building along with East Lodge, Gibbsyard, Hanging Garden, Ice House, Oswald Hall, Oswald's Temple, West Lodge and Wilson Hall, and is part of the wider Auchincruive Estate.
