Description

The walled garden dates from the earlier to mid-19th century and comprises two curved, terraced areas. It is enclosed by coped brick walls, with a walled corridor running from east to west through the centre. A lean-to glasshouse is located centrally on the north wall, with stepped-down flanking walls. A depressed-arched sandstone gateway with a two-leaf cast-iron gate is positioned on the west side. A lean-to glasshouse is also situated on the south side of the central wall of the south terrace, backing onto brick, sandstone, and concrete potting sheds and gardeners' accommodation, with former glasshouses to the left and right. Curved walls slope down to the west, featuring a doorway and brick arch leading to the north terrace, and a two-leaf cast-iron gate on the southwest. A square-plan, single-storey and attic lodge stands at the east end, flanked by a two-leaf cast-iron gate.

The Auchincruive Estate has a history stretching back to the 13th century when it belonged to the Wallace family. Ownership passed through several hands before James Murray of Broughton sold it to Richard Oswald in 1764. The Oswald family retained ownership until 1925 when it was sold to John M Hannah, who gifted it to the West of Scotland Agricultural College in 1927, and it remains under their ownership. The original formal landscape at Auchincruive dates from the 18th century, but has been significantly reduced and remodelled around 1830, likely coinciding with the construction of the walled garden. The lodge at the east end served as the Head Gardener’s House, and the buildings along the central service corridor were used as potting sheds and further gardener accommodation. The garden features a mix of formal and informal planting, although much of this dates from the 20th century, with only some original yew trees remaining.

The site is part of a wider group of listed buildings including the East Lodge, Gibbsyard, Hanging Garden, Ice House, Oswald Hall, Oswald’s Temple, West Lodge and Wilson Hall.
