Description
Kilkerran House is a significant building with origins dating back to around 1700, attributed to architect James Smith. The house underwent classical enlargement, with fireplaces supplied by William Adam, and further additions made in 1818 by James Gillespie Graham. A billiards room was added by David Bryce in 1855, and stable offices were constructed by Brown and Wardrop in 1873. The building has been re-oriented, with the principal front now facing south. It features a symmetrical design, constructed from ashlar stone, and stands three storeys tall, with the main rooms located on the first floor. The centre has a pedimented slight projection with round attic windows and three parapet urns, while flanking pavilions have slate piends connected by a ridge in the centre. The side facades are bowed, and at the rear, parallel wings project, with the easternmost wing having a bowed end. The interior decoration is of considerable interest.
