Description
Clyde Cottage, located at 1 Arran Terrace in Ayr, is a single-storey and attic, three-bay end-of-terrace cottage built in the later 19th century. The exterior features coursed ashlar with a base course, eaves course, a modillion cornice, and strip quoins. The ground floor windows have raised margins and cornices.
On the west elevation, which serves as the entrance, there is a step leading to the central entrance (No 1A). This entrance includes a bracketed corniced doorpiece, a timber door, and a letterbox fanlight, with sidelights and single windows on either side. The attic features canted dormers on the outer left and right, with a finial on the right dormer only.
The north elevation, facing Montgomerie Terrace, also has a step leading to the central entrance (No 1, Clyde Cottage). This entrance has an arched key-blocked doorpiece, a timber door, and a letterbox fanlight, flanked by single windows, along with a single window in the gablehead. There is a modern extension on the outer left side.
The cottage has plate glass timber sash and case windows, with four panes in the attic. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes rooflights, stone skews (with kneelers on the Montgomerie Terrace gable), and a modillion corniced stack on the left side (with no cornice on the stack to the right). There are tall circular cans on the left side only.
The interior was not seen in 1998.
The property is enclosed by a low coped boundary wall, which includes replacement railings, square-plan iron gatepiers on both elevations with decorative panels and pyramidal finials, and decorative single-leaf iron gates. There are also vehicular gates leading to Montgomerie Terrace that provide access to a modern garage.
