Description
Cottar House is an earlier 19th-century single-storey building, originally built as coach buildings in an L-plan. It is constructed of rubble with long and short sandstone dressings, featuring long and short quoins and projecting cills.
The north (entrance) elevation is asymmetrical, with a doorway in the bay to the left, fitted with a modern door. To the right of the doorway are three narrow, glazed vertical openings, and a small window is located in the bay to the right. The west elevation has a gable to the left, with a window set in the gablehead; the remainder of this elevation was not visible in 1999. The south elevation was also not visible in 1999. The east elevation has a variety of openings, which are partially obscured by railings.
The roof is covered in graded grey slate with lead ridges. It has coped stone skews, corniced gablehead stacks with octagonal cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior was not inspected in 1999.
The site includes coped rubble boundary walls to the east and west, including a modern garage opening doorway to the west.
Cottar House forms a group value with the Former Manse at St Quivox (listed separately). Originally the coach buildings to St Quivox Manse, the building has been converted to domestic use, but the original roofline and many of the original openings have been retained. The building's existence is documented on Thomson’s map of Ayrshire from 1828 and on Ordnance Survey maps from 1860 and 1897. Further information is presented in Rob Close’s Ayrshire and Arran (1992, p40).
