Description
St John's Cottage in Maybole is an early 19th century picturesque pavilion type cottage designed from a pattern book by Richard Elsam, published in 1803. The cottage features a symmetrical garden front with one and two storeys and has two wings to the southeast. It is constructed of stugged ashlar with droved dressings. The entrance is located at the northeast in a single storey half-pitched wing, featuring a central door flanked by windows, all set in shallow round-headed recesses. A single course of masonry from the two-storey central block rises above the outer roof to support the eaves and a higher piend roof.
The garden front includes a central two-storey canted bay, flanked by single storey half-pedimented lean-to bays, with outer windows also in shallow round-headed recesses. There is a return three-bay elevation to the southwest, with a bow on the left side. All windows are fitted with 12-pane sashes, except for the small rectangular upper windows in the canted bay. The roofs are shallow pitched or piended slate, and there are two corniced stacks on mid-partition walls. Inside, there is a fine central stair under a dome, featuring delicate cast-iron balusters, simple plasterwork, and painted panels in the dome.
