Description
1-2 Carlton Place on Prince Alfred Street in Lerwick is a pair of mirrored houses built in 1886. These single-storey and attic homes sit over a basement and are arranged in a rectangular plan on a sloping end-terrace site. The exterior features stugged, squared, and snecked stone with droved ashlar dressings and details, including projecting cills at the windows.
The south elevation facing Prince Alfred Street showcases a single-storey and attic design with paired entrance doors at the principal floor. The left door has six panels, while the right door has four panels, each adorned with stained glass and plate glass fanlights, respectively. The centre bay on the first floor has paired windows, and the stone dormerheads with gablet skewputts break the eaves in both the centre and outer bays.
On the west elevation, there is a random rubble gable with windows located at the principal and first floors on the outer left and right sides. The north elevation, which is the rear, also features a single-storey and attic over basement design, with a piend-roofed projection at the centre.
The roofs and dormers are covered with purple-grey slates. A stugged sandstone chimney stack with six flues is located at the west side, featuring a coped top and predominantly circular cans. The gable ends have ashlar skew copes with gablet skewputts. The building has modern glazing throughout.
