Description

This is an early 19th-century garden wall and ha-ha, with a later gardener’s cottage built in 1870 for William Chambers. The cottage is a single storey with an attic, comprising a three-bay rectangular main block and single-storey wings. It is built of whitewashed rubble with sandstone angle margins and window dressings featuring droved margins, chamfered arrises, projecting sills, and droved tabbed quoins (also whitewashed). The rear elevation is plain rubble. The high garden wall is constructed of lime and whinstone rubble with sandstone ashlar quoins and copes, Gibbsian entrances, ball-finialled angle piers, and a ha-ha constructed from stone taken from Ormiston Tower.

The west (principal) elevation of the cottage has a stone step leading to a central entrance door, which has tabbed quoins, droved margins, and chamfered arrises, with carved "WC" and "1870" in the angles. A former two-leaf timber boarded door is now a single leaf, with a plain rectangular fanlight above. Large windows with chamfered arrises and droved margins flank the door. The north elevation features an ashlar window surround with chamfered arrises to the right of centre and a single-storey, flat-roofed porch with a semi-glazed door in the right return; the door surround is chamfered to match the windows of the main house. The east (rear) elevation is plain rubble, with ashlar window surrounds with chamfered arrises to the left and right, and three roof lights to the attic. A later corrugated-iron lean-to is attached to the far left. The south elevation has an ashlar window surround with chamfered arrises to the left and a single-storey, piend-roofed square outhouse (a coal/log shed) below a wall stack, featuring a timber boarded door.

The windows are timber sash and case with 2 and 4 panes of glazing; the roof is grey slate with lead ridging and flashing, with some later single-pane roof lights to the rear. Painted cast-iron rainwater goods are present. Large, shouldered ashlar wallhead stacks are located on the south and north sides, with moulded neck copes and octagonal paired cans (one potentially original, matching the style and material of the stack).

The cottage interior retains the original room layout, along with skirting boards, interior woodwork, and fire surrounds.

The high lime stone rubble garden wall has segmental copes and runs south from the southeast of the steading, then east towards the stables. It includes round angle piers with round stone copes and stalked ball finials; arched entrances with projecting keystones and impost stones, one entrance now blind, with timber two-leaf panelled doors. An arched ha-ha with segmental copes runs from the west of the main house and arcs south in front of the Garden Cottage.
