Description

The Watch House, located in the churchyard of Whitsome Old Parish Church, is a near rectangular-plan, single-storey building dating from 1820. It is constructed from harl-pointed red rubble sandstone with rubble quoins and long and short rubble surrounds around its openings.

The churchyard features gravestones arranged in formal rows, showcasing a variety of styles. These include 18th-century stones with momento mori, table-top monuments, and 19th-century classical headstones and obelisks. Notably, there is a large pedimented stone dedicated to David Hogarth Esq. of Hilton, which has pilastered bays and corniced eaves. The site is enclosed by rubble-coped, random rubble walls, with wrought-iron gatepiers to the north and a wrought-iron gate.

On the south elevation of the Watch House, the entrance features a boarded timber door that is offset to the right of centre, with a lintel inscribed with the year 1820, though the inscription is fading. The west side elevation has a low stone bench in front of the wall. The building has a grey slate roof with raised stone skews and the remains of a coped apex stack on the west side. Inside, the walls are made of red rubble sandstone, and there is an open timber roof. A rubble fireplace is centered in the west wall.
