Description

4 Main Street in Whitsome is a pair of two-storey, two-bay terraced cottages built in 1840, with later alterations from the 19th century. Originally single-storey, they now form a symmetrical four-bay block, with single-storey additions at the rear. The cottages are constructed from tooled and squared rubble sandstone, featuring heavy pointing in parts, and have polished sandstone dressings. The sides are finished in random rubble.

The gableheads are adorned with timber bargeboards, and the corners are marked by rubble quoins. The openings have droved long and short surrounds, with projecting painted cills.

On the northwest elevation facing Main Street, there are boarded timber doors centrally located at the ground level, with a decorative lintel panel above No 4 dated 1840. Each outer bay has a single window at ground level, and there are additional single windows in the gableheads that break the eaves above. The windows feature 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case style.

The roof is covered in grey slate, with a raised stone skew on the right side shared with No 2, and brick stacks at the apex and ridge, along with various circular cans. The property also includes cast-iron rainwater goods. The interiors were not seen during the last inspection in 1997.
