Description

View Holloa is a house located on Main Street in Whitsome, dating from the earlier to mid-19th century, around 1845, with later additions and alterations. This symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay house is part of a terrace and was raised from a single storey. To the outer right, there is a single-storey, single-bay garage block.

The front of the house features painted, coursed, and tooled render at the ground level, while the first floor is finished with painted, coursed, and tooled sandstone, along with painted, droved dressings. The rear has painted render at the ground level and tooled rubble sandstone at the first floor, with droved long and short rubble dressings. Notable architectural features include a raised base course, a pilastered and pedimented doorpiece, and projecting cills at the first floor. There is also a single-storey, single-bay outbuilding at the rear.

On the northwest (Main Street) elevation, steps lead up to a timber panelled door at the centre of the ground floor, which is topped by a plate glass fanlight. The doorpiece is flanked by pilasters, has a plain frieze, a cornice, and an acroterion motif above a shallow pediment. A single window is aligned above the door, with additional single windows in both flanking bays. To the outer right, there is a boarded timber garage door.

The southeast (rear) elevation features a modern door offset to the left of centre, with single windows in both flanking bays. A patio door is located in the outer right bay, with a single window above it. A small-paned dormer is present in the single-storey addition to the outer left.

The house has modern four-pane tilting timber windows at the front and modern glazing at the rear. The roof is covered with grey slate and has raised stone skews, with the left skew being mutual with the adjoining property. The apex stack is missing on the right side, while there is a mutual brick-built ridge stack on the left.

The interior was not seen in 1997.

The outbuilding, located on the northwest (entrance) elevation, is constructed of tooled rubble sandstone with droved rubble quoins and droved long and short surrounds to the opening. A boarded timber door is offset to the left of centre, with "VV 1845. S" embossed in the lintel. The outbuilding has a grey slate mono-pitch roof, raised stone skews, scrolled skewputts, and replacement rainwater goods. The interior was also not seen in 1997.
