Description

4 Farm Cottage is a mid-19th century building with later alterations, consisting of two terraced rectangular-plan, two-storey ranges that step down the hill, forming a nearly continuous 21-bay range of seven farmworkers' cottages. At the rear, there are single-storey lean-to additions that are accessed from the back. The exterior is mainly constructed from harl-pointed tooled rubble sandstone, with some whinstone at the ground level and lightly droved sandstone dressings. The northern side elevation is harled, and the rear additions are also harled, with some sections painted. The building features timber bargeboards, tooled rubble quoins, tooled long and short surrounds to the front openings, lightly droved margins, and projecting cills. The gable-headed windows also have timber bargeboards.

On the east (front) elevation, there are four cottages (Nos 1-4) with a 12-bay layout, featuring single windows in all ground-level bays and eight gable-headed windows arranged in groups of two above. The slightly lower block for Nos 5-7 has a 9-bay layout, with single windows in all ground-level bays and six gable-headed windows grouped in pairs above.

The west (rear) elevation of Nos 1-4 has irregularly placed lean-to additions with single doors, mostly replacements, offset to the right of center, and single windows in the flanking bays. Nos 5-7 also have irregularly fenestrated lean-to additions with part-glazed boarded timber doors at the center (with a replacement door for No 7) and single windows in the flanking bays.

The windows predominantly feature six-pane upper and two-pane lower glazing in timber sash and case frames, although some first-floor windows at the front have uPVC glazing, and modern glazing is present throughout the rear. The roofs are covered with grey slate and include skylights at the rear. There are regularly placed brick-built ridge and apex stacks with sandstone bases and circular cans, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interiors were not seen in 1997.
