Description

Lambden House is a small Classical house dated 1839, with alterations and additions made by T Bowhill Gibson around 1920. It features two storeys and an irregular U-shaped plan with a piend roof. The entrance is marked by a Roman Doric tetrastyle portico, and the outer bays are bowed, complemented by symmetrical single-storey pavilions. The house is constructed from grey stugged sandstone ashlar with droved ashlar dressings on the front elevation, while the side and rear elevations are made of squared sandstone. The main block has a base course, cill course, eaves course, and blocking course, with similar courses on the pavilions. The fenestration is regular, featuring raised margins on the south, east, and west elevations, and corniced tripartite windows.

The northern pavilions are connected to the main block by screen walls and a balustraded link. The side elevations of the main block have three bays with tripartite windows in the recessed central bay. At the rear, there are service quarters that include a tall Italianate water tower with a pyramidal roof, flanked by lower piended wings.

The windows are generally 12-pane timber sash and case, and the roof is covered with Welsh slate. The house features octagonal ashlar stacks grouped in threes with small yellow clay cans.

Inside, the house retains much of its 1920s character, with many original features. There are four-panelled timber doors throughout, with those in the principal rooms having deeply moulded architraves. The hall and stair are timber panelled, with timber balusters and rail. The drawing room showcases Adam revival plasterwork, a timber and gesso chimneypiece, and a panelled dado. The dining room includes a timber fireplace and a buffet niche, while the library is fitted with timber shelves, and the butler's pantry retains original cupboards.
