Description
Stonefold is a farmhouse, likely dating from the late 18th century, although it was substantially rebuilt and reworked in the later 19th century, with further additions and alterations made subsequently. The building is arranged over two storeys, and has a rectangular plan with a full-height wing at the rear, creating an L-shaped layout, and further single-storey extensions to the rear. The exterior is whitewashed harl with cream sandstone dressings. A raised base course is present in part, and a sandstone eaves course runs along the front. Narrow quoin strips are visible, with stop-chamfered sandstone margins at ground level. Basket-arched, chamfered sandstone margins frame the gabled windows that break through the eaves at the first floor, featuring bracketed skewputts. Sandstone mullions divide the biparted windows. Projecting cills are found on all windows.
The south-east, or entrance, elevation has steps leading to a timber-panelled front door, centrally positioned at ground level, with etched glass in the sidelights and a three-pane fanlight. The door surround is chamfered with a bracketed cornice. Bipartite windows are located at ground level in the flanking bays, with gabled windows breaking the eaves above.
The south-west elevation features a modern window opening at ground level to the left side of the main house, and a single-storey addition to the left. A recessed porch is situated beyond this addition, with a single window at ground level in the full-height wing, recessed to the left. A small window and a modern garage door complete the remaining bays to the left.
The north-west, or rear, elevation shows a projecting gabled wing to the left, with single-storey additions in front. Single windows are located in the single-storey additions, recessed to the right.
The north-east, or side, elevation has single windows at both floors, set to the right of centre of the main house. A two-bay wing is located to the right, with single windows at ground level in each bay, and a gabled window breaking the eaves to the right. Single-storey additions extend to the outer right.
The front windows are timber sash and case with plate glass and four-pane glazing. Replacement four-pane timber windows are at the sides and rear, and rooflights are present. The roof is covered with purple-grey slate, featuring stone coped skews and bracketed skewputts. Corniced sandstone apex stacks rise from the roof, topped with octagonal cans.
The interior was not inspected in 1998.
Low rubble garden walls partially enclose the site. Square-plan, coursed cream sandstone gatepiers with corniced caps and platformed tops flank the entrance, supporting a two-leaf decorative iron gate.
