Description

These are a pair of semi-detached cottages, built in the late 19th century, along with two further cottages forming a group of four. The cottages are constructed from cream-coloured squared and snecked sandstone rubble with stugged ashlar dressings. The windows have ashlar mullions, and the eaves are bracketed. The gables have overhanging eaves and plain bargeboards.

The front elevation (south) is symmetrical, featuring a pair of gabled bays in the centre. The cottage to the right is slightly broader and projects forward. The ground floor windows are tripartite, while the upper floor windows are mostly bipartite, set within the gableheads. The doors are modern at No. 1 and boarded at No. 2, both with letterbox fanlights above. Single-storey bays flank the doors.

The east and west elevations are gabled, with windows facing north on the ground floor and centrally placed at first floor within the gableheads. A single-storey lean-to is recessed to the north side. The north elevation has a lean-to with a window in the outer bay and a window and back door in the inner bay. A bipartite window breaks the eaves with a gabled dormerhead above it on the first floor.

Cottages 3 and 4 are similar, but the front gable of No. 3 is not advanced, and No. 4 has a large, gabled, two-storey harled addition to the rear.

The windows are timber sash and case, with small diamond panes in the advanced gables; other windows mostly have plate glass, and the extension has modern windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped stacks in the centre of each block. Cast-iron guttering and downpipes are present. The statutory address covers numbers 1 to 4 inclusive, Easter Ulston Cottages.
